Michelle Williams Reveals She Secretly Married Musician Phil Elverum

"I never gave up on love."

In a revealing profile in Vanity Fair this week Michelle Williams got very real about her life, love and the pay-gap incident with Mark Wahlberg.

One thing we weren't expecting so much was the quiet revelation that at some point we missed the fact that Williams got married!

Yep, during the interview Williams opened up about her relationship with musician Phil Elverum who she secretly married.

Since the death Heath Ledger in 2008, Williams has been incredibly private and never commented on any of her relationships following. Initially hoping to refrain from commenting ("The internet's an asshole"), Williams later revealed that she and Elverum married in a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks in order to "take some heat and confusion" out of the news when it would eventually break.

The ceremony was witnessed by a small handful of their friends and family including Williams' daughter Matilda and Elverum's daughter from a previous marriage to Geneviève Castrée, who died just 18 months after the birth of their child.

Obviously I’ve never once in my life talked about a relationship," Williams said, "but Phil isn’t anyone else. And that’s worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole."

"I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free."

Her relationship wasn't the only thing Williams finally broke her silence on, also requesting to talk about what happened when she was paid less than one-tenth of one percent of what her male co-star, Mark Wahlberg, would be receiving.

She described feeling "de-valued" after learning the disparity between what she and Wahlberg were earning on the reshoots for All the Money in the World -- a last-minute attempt to edit Kevin Spacey out of the film following the allegations of sexual harassment levelled at the actor.

Following one man's discrepancies, Williams was forced to face another of Hollywood's gendered injustices noting, "That also chimes in with pretty much every other experience you’ve had in your workplace, so you just learn to swallow it".

It was revealed that for her work in the reshoots Williams received a daily rate of $80 while Wahlberg received almost $2 million for the 10-days. Ultimately the actor donated $1.5 million to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund.

Reflecting on the debacle now, Williams seemed happy to have contributed to the wider conversation and awareness of these ongoing issues noting, "a private humiliation became a public turning point".

She also revealed that when she was offered her latest TV role in the Lin-Manuel Miranda produced series based on Bob Fosse's life, she was offered the same amount as her male co-star "without having to negotiate for it".
