Gina Rodriguez Used Jane The Virgin Emmy Money To Send Undocumented Latinx Student To College

"You can desire recognition and, at the same time, decide to not play in the confines of the game as it's set up."

Every year studios invest in "For Your Consideration" campaigns in order to woo voting groups for prestigious awards like the Oscars or Emmys.

This year, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez decided to forego the expensive campaign in an attempt to secure her an Emmy for her role on the show, but instead used the funds for a better cause.

"Our show has always jumped at any opportunity to help me do something for the Latinx community," she told The Hollywood Reporter, "So I asked my showrunner if we could do something different with the money this year".

Instead of investing that insane amount of money into the show's Emmy campaign, Rodriguez has managed to secure the funds to send a young undocumented woman to Princeton, with THR reporting that all four years of her college have been fully funded.

"FYC is a bizarre dance," the actor said, "Whatever you do requires an insane amount of money".

Despite the amazing deed Rodriguez wasn't so keen on discussing how she was using the studio's funds saying, "It's taboo to talk about the money being spent but it's the reality".

Rodriguez worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles to find the scholarship's worthy candidate.

"I think sharing this might inspire other people to do something similar. You can desire recognition and, at the same time, decide to not play in the confines of the game as it's set up."

This isn't the first time Rodriguez has used her celebrity status for good or to support the Latinx community. In 2015 she joined the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

"Serving on HSF's board is a great opportunity to say thank you and to help open doors for the Latino students to follow. I wish I could tell every one of them how much my college education means to me".

Jane the Virgin will return for its fifth and final season in 2019, the series is yet to win an Emmy, however, in 2015 Rodriguez won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

During her acceptance speech Rodriguez said, "This award is so much more than myself it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes".
