Aussie Actors The Real Winners From Netflix's Huge Growth

Australian actors are getting much-needed exposure through online streaming platforms such as Netflix and that is only set to continue.

Netflix has almost 140 million subscribers and Aussie actors are set to benefit as a result.

Australia's first Netflix original series, Tidelands was released late last year and a suprising amount of Aussies star in several Netflix shows including Jessica Jones, Stranger Things, Santa Clarita Diet And Mindhunter.

“I think performers really are responding to and working with these changes, they’re able to participate in this changing landscape,” NIDA's  (National Institute of Dramatic Art) Mark Gaal said.

According to Roy Morgan research, there were almost 10 million Aussie Netflix subscribers and rising.

The streaming service has provided opportunities for Aussie performers to make their way into mainstream entertainment according to Gaal.

“It means that there are more opportunities out there for performers because there’s a greater range of ways in which stories can be told.”

“I think cinema and live theatre like streaming services will continue to evolve and continue to adapt and vary themselves.”
